Mediating Custody Disputes

When answering the question “Is mediation the right option for my divorce?”, a lot of people assume that mediation is only for those who “pretty much” have everything agreed to, or at least have the more important issues agreed to.
One of the advantages of mediation is that it allows both parents to decide on the terms of their divorce, including a parenting schedule for the children, without a judge deciding for them. While conflict between parents going through a divorce will exist — almost be definition of being in a divorce — parents get to decide how to raise their children. Mediation is designed to facilitate constructive communication between parents, to resolve their conflict so that each parent can resolve the present conflict, as well as to productively resolve conflict in the future.
